The Earth Charter Preamble – The Vision of the Earth Charter in Irish
The beautiful, inspiring introduction of the Earth Charter is below.
The translation of the concluding Way Forward statement of the Earth Charter is nearly completed.
Preamble
We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future.
As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile, the future at once holds great peril and great promise.
To move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms, we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny.
We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace. Towards this end, it is imperative that we, the peoples of Earth, declare our responsibility to one another, to the greater community of life, and to future generations.
Réamhrá
Táimid ag seasamh anois ag pointe áirithe i stair an Domhain, am nuair a chaithfidh an cine daonna a todhchaí a roghnú.
Faoi mar a n-éiríonn an Domhan níos mó idirspleách chomh maith le sobhriste, tá baol agus geallantas in ann dúinn.
Chun dul chun chinn a dhéanamh, caithfimid an éagsúlacht iontach a aithint i measc na gcultúir agus na bhfoirm beatha éagsúla, agus go bhfuilimid mar aon clann agus aon pobal amháin san Domhain le cinniúnt coitianta.
Caithfimid teacht le chéile chun sochaí inbhuanaithe domhanda a chruthú, bunaithe ar mheas don Nádúr, cearta uilíoch daonna, ceartas eacnamaíochta agus cultúr tógtha ar shíocháin. Leis an aidhm seo, tá sé riachtanach go bhfuilimid, muintir an Domhain, ag fógairt freagracht lena chéile, don phobal uilig mór-thimpeall chomh maith leis na nglúnta fós le teacht aníos.
Earth, Our Home
Humanity is part of a vast evolving universe. Earth, our home, is alive with a unique community of life.
The forces of nature make existence a demanding and uncertain adventure, but Earth has provided the conditions essential to life’s evolution. The resilience of the community of life and the well-being of humanity depend upon preserving a healthy biosphere with all its ecological systems, a rich variety of plants and animals, fertile soils, pure waters, and clean air. The global environment with its finite resources is a common concern of all peoples. The protection of Earth’s vitality, diversity, and beauty is a sacred trust.
An Domhan, Ár mBaile.
Glacann an cine daonna páirt i gCruinne oll-mhór atá ag síor-athrú. Tá an Domhan, ár mbaile, beo le chumann na mbeatha uathúil.
Is féidir le fórsaí an Nádúr an beatha a chur i mbaol, ach mar sin féin, is é an Domhain a thug coinníollacha na mbeatha dúinn atá riachtanach i gcomhair éabhlóid na mbeatha, ar an gcéad dul síos. Tá athléimneacht pobal na mbeatha agus sláinte na daoine ag braitheadh ar an mbithsféar a chaoimhniú, lena gcórais eiceolaíochta go léir, bailiúcháin leathan de phlandaí agus d’ainmhithe, talún torthúil, uisce úr agus aer ghlan. Cuireann staid an timpeallacht imní ar mhuintir uilig an domhain. Tá sé mar dhualgais naofa againn an áilleacht, beocht agus éagsulacht seo go léir a chaoimhniú.
The Global Situation
The dominant patterns of production and consumption are causing environmental devastation, the depletion of resources, and a massive extinction of species. Communities are being undermined. The benefits of development are not shared equitably and the gap between rich and poor is widening. Injustice, poverty, ignorance, and violent conflict are widespread and the cause of great suffering. An unprecedented rise in human population has overburdened ecological and social systems. The foundations of global security are threatened. These trends are perilous—but not inevitable.
An Suíomh Domhanda
Tá na príomh phátrúin táirgeadh agus tomhaltas an cúis go bhfuil scrios na dtimpeallachta ann, achmhainní ag dul ar meath, agus éaglach speiceas. Tá an bonn á baint ó phobail. Níl buntáistí an bhforbairt á roinnt go cothrom agus tá an bearna idir saibhir agus daibhir ag méadú. Tá éigeartas, bochtanas, iargultas, coimhlint go forleathan agus ag cruthú níos mó folaingt. Leis an ardú san daonra, nach raibh chomh mór riamh, tá na córais eiceolaíochta agus soisialta faoi bhrú. Tá buntús slándála an domhain i mbaol. Tá bagairt mór ag an gclaonadh seo, ach níl siad cinnte fós.
The Challenges Ahead
The choice is ours: form a global partnership to care for Earth and one another or risk the destruction of ourselves and the diversity of life. Fundamental changes are needed in our values, institutions, and ways of living. We must realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more. We have the knowledge and technology to provide for all and to reduce our impacts on the environment. The emergence of a global civil society is creating new opportunities to build a democratic and humane world. Our environmental, economic, political, social, and spiritual challenges are interconnected, and together we can forge inclusive solutions.
Na Dúshláin ós ár gComhair Amach
Tá an rogha againn: páirtnéireacht domhanda a chruthú chun aire a thabhairt don Domhain agus dá chéile nó sinn féin agus éagsúlacht na mbeatha a scriosadh. Tá gá le hathruithe bunúsacha inár luachanna, inár n-institiúidí agus inár mbealaí maireachtála. Ní mór dúinn a thuiscint, nuair a bhíonn na bunriachtanais comhlíonta, go mbaineann forbairt dhaonna go príomha le bheith níos mó, gan a bheith níos mó. Tá an t-eolas agus an teicneolaíocht againn chun soláthar a dhéanamh do chách agus chun ár dtionchair ar an gcomhshaol a laghdú. Tá teacht chun cinn na sochaí sibhialta domhanda ag cruthú deiseanna nua chun domhan daonlathach agus daonnachtúil a thógáil. Tá ár ndúshláin chomhshaoil, eacnamaíocha, pholaitiúla, shóisialta agus spioradálta idirnasctha, agus le chéile is féidir linn réitigh chuimsitheacha a chruthú.
Universal Responsibility
To realize these aspirations, we must decide to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying ourselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities. We are at once citizens of different nations and of one world in which the local and global are linked. Everyone shares responsibility for the present and future well-being of the human family and the larger living world. The spirit of human solidarity and kinship with all life is strengthened when we live with reverence for the mystery of being, gratitude for the gift of life, and humility regarding the human place in nature.
We urgently need a shared vision of basic values to provide an ethical foundation for the emerging world community. Therefore, together in hope we affirm the following interdependent principles for a sustainable way of life as a common standard by which the conduct of all individuals, organizations, businesses, governments, and transnational institutions is to be guided and assessed.
Freagracht Uilíoch
Chun na hardmhianta seo a bhaint amach, ní mór dúinn cinneadh a dhéanamh maireachtáil le braith na freagrachta uilechoiteann, sinn féin a aithint le pobal uile an Domhain chomh maith lenár bpobail áitiúla. Is saoránaigh sinn láithreach bonn de náisiúin éagsúla agus de dhomhan amháin ina bhfuil nasc idir an saol áitiúil agus mór-thimpeall na gCruinne. Comhroinneann gach duine freagracht as folláine an dteaghlaigh dhaonna agus an t-saol mór, faoi láthair agus amach anseo. Neartaítear spiorad na dlúthpháirtíochta dhaonna agus na ghaoil leis an saol ar fad nuair a mhairimid le h-ómós do rúndiamhair an duine, buíochas as bronntanas na mbeatha, agus umhlaíocht maidir leis an áit dhaonna sa dhúlra.
Tá géarghá againn le comhfhís de bhunluachanna chun bonn eiticiúil a sholáthar don Phobal Dhomhanda atá ag teacht chun cinn. Dá bhrí sin, le chéile le dóchas, dearbhaímid na prionsabail idirspleácha seo a leanas maidir le slí mhaireachtála inbhuanaithe mar chomhchaighdeán trína ndéanfar iompar gach duine aonair, eagraíochta, gnóthas, rialtais agus institiúide trasnáisiúnta a threorú agus a mheasúnú.
Earth Charter Conclusion:
The Way Forward
As never before in history, common destiny beckons us to seek a new beginning. Such renewal is the promise of these Earth Charter principles. To fulfill this promise, we must commit ourselves to adopt and promote the values and objectives of the Charter.
Bealach dul chun chinn
Is é seo an chéad uair go bhfuil ár gcinniúnt coitianta ag iarraidh tosach nua. Is é seo cad a gheallann Prionsabail Chairt an Domhain. Chun iad a bhaint amach, chaithfimís na h-aidhmeanna a chur i bhfeidhm.
This requires a change of mind and heart. It requires a new sense of global interdependence and universal responsibility. We must imaginatively develop and apply the vision of a sustainable way of life locally, nationally, regionally, and globally.
Tá gá le n-athrú meoin agus croí le seo. Tá gá le tuiscint idirspleáchas agus freagracht an Domhain uilig. Caithfimid forbairt cruthaitheach a dhéanamh dár bhfís, don saol cothaitheach go h-áitiúl, go náisiúta, i ngach ceanntar agus ar fud an Domhain.
Our cultural diversity is a precious heritage and different cultures will find their own distinctive ways to realize the vision. We must deepen and expand the global dialogue that generated the Earth Charter, for we have much to learn from the ongoing collaborative search for truth and wisdom.
Is Oidhreacht luachmhar í an t-éagsúlacht chultúrtha atá againn. Gheobhaidh said a mbealach féin chun an fís ar leith atá acu a fháil. Caithfimid doimhniú agus méadú a dhéanamh ar an gcomhrá Domhanda, a chruthaigh Cairt an Domhain, agus tá alán le foghlaim ón gcuardach i gcomhair an fhírinne agus an Fios.
Life often involves tensions between important values. This can mean difficult choices. However, we must find ways to harmonize diversity with unity, the exercise of freedom with the common good, short-term objectives with long-term goals.
San saol tá teannais idir na luachanna tábhachta. Ciallaíonn sé seo roghnaithe deacra. Ach chaithfimid bealaí a aimsiú chun éagsúlacht a chur in armóin le h-aontas, cur i bhfeidhm na saoirse leis an maithiúnas choitianta, gualanna ghearr-théarmach le ghualanna fad-théarmach.
