For the first 2022 edition of the Visual Artists Ireland Newsheet I was delighted to review a significant artist-led ecosocial creative, the 2020-2021 Breaking Cover programme and public performance by the new Breaking Cover Collective which was hosted and supported by the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).

Disclaimer: I was particularly delighted to write and reflect on this programme and profoundly moving performance, as artist and IMMA public engagement facilitator Paola Catizone and others in this new collective have completed my Haumea Ecoversity Earth Charter and Essential Ecoliteracy online courses.

I was also honoured to give the first talk in the Breaking Cover Programme, skilfully facilitated by Paola Catizone, which included comprehensive ecological, experiential, social and psychological perspectives from leading cultural figures from across Ireland. This programme supported learning for creatives on how to effectively respond to the ecological emergency and advance new ways of thinking and working for personal-collective-planetary wellbeing.

Congratulations to Paola and the members of the collective and also to IMMA for supporting this timely and urgently needed programme.

As with the global shift in education toward sustainability for formal and lifelong learning, new holistic transformative learning systems thinking, psychosocial supports and values education are urgently required for the creative sector for this complex and often confronting topic. Informed creative leadership will be essential to effectively and inclusively guide and engage diverse audience towards more sustainable and just living.

My thanks again for the warm invitation to be involved in the Breaking Cover Programme.

Hello! Kia Ora! My name is Cathy Fitzgerald, and I’m an Irish-based New Zealander living in rural Ireland these past 20 years.

“In these urgent times, I’m passionate about bringing ecoliteracy including new ecological thinking, ethos, language and head-heart-body practices in an empowering transformative learning approach to the creative and wider cultural sector. Creative and cultural sector workers have a crucial leadership role if informed and supported. They can employ their social inclusivity skill and engaging creativity to inspire diverse communities to envision and embrace new understandings, values and actions for a more beautiful and just world.
